The Team
When we tour Australia in July 2027 we will be at the end of our U18 season, however this season we are currently a mix of 15 and 16 year olds who play for either the current U18s or U16s teams at Strathendrick RFC. Despite currently playing over two teams, we are a tight unit of boys who train together and mostly go to the same school; Balfron High School.
It is our close camaraderie and long history together that makes us the formidable unit as a team.
News from the pitch
The Class of 2026 Graduate to Senior Rugby
Friday 3rd April saw our oldest players play their last match for the U18s and graduate to senior rugby at the club. It was an emotional day for all; some of them have played rugby for the youth section for 14 years.
We were pleased to have U18 Team Sponsors Archie Wilson and Gus North from Killearn Tree Surgery and Sawmill oversee proceedings and long serving coach and mentor of these young men, Andy Thomson, hand them over to Eddie Roache, Head Coach of the senior team.
Thank you to Brenda and her team at Fintry Sports and Recreation Club for catering for so many people. Also, many thanks to Strathendrick Rugby Club for their support on the day.
The full class of graduates this year is:
George Thomson, John Winther, Finlay Buchanan, Toby Goodier, Gregor Leckie, Calum Mackay, Calum Beeley, Ollie Wilson, Bruno Mielczarek, Kirk Suttie, Callum Robb, Jack Thomas, Euan Brown and Reuben Brown.
Rugby Tourists from California, USA come to Fintry
We were delighted and proud to host a touring rugby team from Sacramento, California, USA. We know, as previous tourists ourselves, the importance of looking after the international rugby family and making them feel welcome.
On Friday 3rd April we hosted Granite Bay RC and their large touring entourage along with our nearest neighbours at West of Scotland Rugby Club for an afternoon of rugby, food and fun.
In weather conditions that were more Caledonian and Californian, some brilliant if tight rugby was played. Our guests were wonderful to have and the boys made some friends for life.
Many thanks to Nick Hawkins and Cammy Bruce for refereeing in such challenging weather conditions.
End of Season 10s Tournaments
We closed out the 2025-26 rugby season playing in several 10s tournaments.. The final was held on Saturday 7th March and down to three teams; ourselves, St Columba's School and Queen Victoria School. We had something to prove against both teams since earlier in the season the former blocked our dream Murrayfield final and the latter's victory over us in the last conference game prevented us being crowned league champions.
Indicative of the determination and this team's drive to constantly improve, we came out winners in both games; beating St Columba's 20-0 and QVS 7-19. However, it was not just the victories that impressed the travelling supporters but the aggressive, unrelenting style of play we deployed, giving us the platform for some incredibly creative attacking flair.
Scottish National Schools' Bowl Tournament: Semi-Final
Our most recent fixture in this national tournament was the semi-final against old rivals, St Columba's School. It was a hard fought, low scoring battle with tight defences on both teams giving nothing away. Sadly, despite spending the majority of the match camped in the opposition half, we could not find the creative edge to break them down. With a final score of 10-3, the players and coaches were gutted to have been only minutes away from a final at Scotland's home of rugby, Murrayfield.
Inspiresport Schools Conference (West): Second Place
The Inspiresport Boys' U18 West Schools Conference consists of six teams: Jordanhill, Lenzie, Lomond & Helensburgh, Cumnock, Queen Victoria School and ourselves. We played each team twice (home and away) over the course of season. The boys went into the last game of the season knowing a win would be enough to make them Conference Champions. Sadly it was not to be, losing an incredibly tense, end to end game versus Queen Victoria School. However, our performance and results over the course of the whole season helped contribute to Strathendrick RFC/ Balfron HS being crowned whole school champions.
Viking Cup 2025: Champions
During the close season we went on tour to Gothenburg, Sweden and competed in the Viking Cup. Not only did we make many new friends and have lots of fun, but we impressed so many with our style of rugby. However, the highlight was being crowned the U16 Champions of the Viking Cup - our first international trophy!
